Bruxism is the term used to describe excessive clenching and grinding of the teeth that is not a normal chewing movement. Clenching and grinding may occur during the day or at night. During sleep, there is no conscious control over clenching and grinding.
Bruxism involves three main muscles, the temporalis and the masseter muscles which bring the jaws together and the lateral pterygoid muscle which moves the jaw from side to side.
Signs and symptoms of bruxism vary. They may include, but are not limited to; sensitivity in the teeth, tension headaches, worn tooth surfaces, stiffness, pain in the jaw joint and earaches.
Treatment of bruxism can include the recommendation of an occlusal splint. An occlusal splint which can also be called a night guard, is custom made moulded hard plastic that fits over the upper or lower teeth, it protects the teeth from further wear on the tooth surface and is mainly worn at night.
Another option for treatment of bruxism is the use of injectables such as Botox injections. These injectables acts as a muscle relaxant and can assist with easing the pressure caused by clenching and grinding.
Do you think you suffer from bruxism? If so we recommend booking a consultation with a dentist to discuss what options would best suit your individual needs.
